Berne performing

Berne was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and trained in the cathedral choirs that shaped the sound of her city before she ever stood on a concert stage. Now in her mid-fifties, she sings from exile — unable to return home after losing her husband and, soon after, her safety, to the political unrest that followed. Her voice, often described as angelic and unguarded, carries that distance in every phrase: the sacred hush of the choir loft, the ache of a door that will not open again.

Berne's repertoire draws on the ethereal, atmospheric songwriting of artists like Enya, Eurielle and Zaz, reimagined through a voice formed by Haitian sacred music and Kreyòl phrasing. What began as a way to hold onto home has become, for her, a way to keep singing toward it.
